কৃষিমন্ত্রী ড. মো: আব্দুস শহীদ বলেছেন, দেশের ১৭ কোটি মানুষের খাদ্য নিরাপত্তার জন্য কৃষির গুরুত্ব অপরিসীম। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনার নেতৃত্বে বর্তমান সরকারের কৃষিবান্ধব নীতির কল্যাণে খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা ও কৃষি উৎপাদনে অভাবনীয় সাফল্য অর্জিত হয়েছে। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা খাদ্য ঘাটতির দেশকে খাদ্যে উদ্বৃত্তের দেশে পরিণত করেছেন। কিন্তু ভবিষ্যতে খাদ্য উৎপাদন ও খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা টেকসই করার ক্ষেত্রে মূল চ্যালেঞ্জ হলো জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন।
আজ মঙ্গলবার বিকালে রাজধানীর হোটেল আমারিতে বাংলাদেশে জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা ও টেকসই কৃষির ক্ষেত্রে চ্যালেঞ্জ ও করণীয় বিষয়ে আন্তর্জাতিক সেমিনারে মন্ত্রী এসব কথা বলেন। আন্তর্জাতিক কৃষি গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানসমূহের সংগঠন কনসাল্টেটিভ গ্রুপ অব ইন্টারন্যাশনাল এগ্রিকালচারাল রিসার্চ (সিজিআইএআর) এ অনুষ্ঠানের আয়োজন করে। মন্ত্রী বলেন, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের ফলে সবচেয়ে ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ দেশের একটি বাংলাদেশ।
জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন ভবিষ্যতে খাদ্য উৎপাদন বিশেষ করে ধানের উৎপাদনে প্রত্যক্ষ ঝুঁকি তৈরি করবে; ধানের উৎপাদনে নেতিবাচক প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে। এসব বিষয় বিবেচনায় নিয়ে বর্তমান সরকার জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের বিরূপ প্রভাব মোকাবেলায় অগ্রাধিকার ভিত্তিতে কাজ করছে। সরকারের লক্ষ্য হলো টেকসই, নিরাপদ ও লাভজনক কৃষি ব্যবস্থা গড়ে তোলা। কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয়ের এক্সপার্ট পোলের সদস্য অধ্যাপক লুৎফুল হাসানের সভাপতিত্বে আন্তর্জাতিক ধান গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউটের (ইরি) বাংলাদেশ প্রতিনিধি হোমনাথ ভান্ডারি, ভিয়েতনামের কৃষি ও পল্লী উন্নয়ন মন্ত্রণালয়ের সিনিয়র অফিসার ডাউ দ্য অ্যান, কম্বোডিয়ায় কৃষি, বন ও মৎস্য মন্ত্রণালয়ের উপমন্ত্রী ফেলোউন চ্যান, ইরির সিনিয়র বিজ্ঞানী বোয়র্ন ওলে স্যান্ডার প্রমুখ বক্তব্য রাখেন।
